DynoNotepad Converter
Background
Early in the life of my NOS 1.3 based MessagePad 120, I purchased
DynoNotepad and took 250K of notes. After upgrading to NOS 2.0,
DynoNotepad would no longer run; meaning I lost access to my
DynoNotepad-stored notes.
When I first upgraded to NOS 2.0, Apple Support promised me that
the Newton Connection Utility would allow me to convert my DynoNotepad
data into something that was NOS 2.0 readable. As we all know, the NCU
doesn’t do this. So, I’ve now cobbled something together to
perform that conversion for me.
More Details
The DynoNotepad converter is simly a Perl script which takes a
DynoNotepad soup (dumped with "Pour") and converts it into a
data stream suitable for loading into NOS 2.0 Outlines via Slurpee.
The converter is used as follows:
- Use the freeware Pour utility (by Matthew Dixon Cowles <MattC@online.apple.com>)
to dump the Outlines and Topics soups to your desktop computer.
- Run the converter, dnp2slrp.pl, on the dumped soups.
- Use Slurpee (by Steve Weyer <weyer@kagi.com>) to load the
notes back into your Newton.
- Optionally, run the dnp2tm.pl script to produce a report
of the timestamp value of each outline; then use one of the many
Soup Editors to manually reset the timestamp of each outline. This
manual step is necessary because Slurpee always resets the
timestamp slot when it creates a notepad entry.
I have provided some test data so that you may try the script out
to see how it works. A welcome addition to this package would be a
Slurpee DUMP template so that Pour would not have to be used. There
nothing wrong with Pour, it would simply be less trouble if one less
tool had to be used.
